Imagine being a mother whose greatest fear is not her own imprisonment, but what will happen to her child.
For some incarcerated mothers, the journey into prison does not happen alone. Their babies may accompany them, spending their earliest years behind walls instead of playing freely in a garden, running across a playground, or exploring the world around them.
These mothers are still mothers. They still worry, love, dream, and hope for their children's future. Yet motherhood behind bars comes with unique emotional, psychological, and practical challenges.
Babies need more than food and shelter. They need nurturing, stimulation, healthcare, and opportunities to develop. Mothers, too, need psychosocial support, guidance, and preparation for life after release.
At Lespwar Trust, we believe that incarceration should not erase a mother's dignity or a child's right to a healthy start in life. Through psychosocial support, advocacy, and partnerships, we seek to promote the wellbeing of mothers and children affected by incarceration.
Because a prison sentence should never mean a child is sentenced to a disadvantaged beginning in life, Lespwar Trust introduced a low-cash-bail initiative to support eligible mothers detained for petty offences, particularly those whose babies remain behind bars or whose children are left without their primary caregiver.
You can help us make a difference! If you would like to support this initiative through a financial donation or by contributing baby essentials such as nappies, clothing, feeding supplies, and toiletries, please reach out to Lespwar Trust. Together, we can help mothers reunite with their children and give little ones a more hopeful start in life.
Every mother deserves support. Every child deserves a chance to thrive.
